Major technical projects in Greece
Athens Metro
A few years ago, not only did the METRO emerge as one of the biggest and most complex projects to have ever being constructed in our country, but also as one of the greatest in Europe. Today, the METRO is a reality. Its operation changes the transportation map of Athens, gives a great relief to its residents' daily life and improves the overall functioning of the city. The two METRO lines, together with the existing ISAP line, make up the body of a new, more complete, fast and effective urban transport network.
Thessaloniki Metro
After the unsuccessful attempt to have the Thessaloniki Metro constructed by the Concession Contract method (1998-2003), in September 2003 the decision was made for this specific Project to be constructed by means of National and European Union funds.
Its first phase was completed in November 2004. The Contract with the Contracting Joint Venture AEGEK – IMPREGILO – ANSALDO T.S.F – SELI – ANSALDOBREDA was signed on April 7th 2006 and the construction of the Project commenced at the end of June 2006.

Rion-Antirion Bridge
Since Harilaos Trikoupis' vision when he was Prime Minister of Greece one hundred years ago, Greece had the great dream of a bridge crossing the 3 km Corinth Gulf strait. In 2004, a long-standing dream will become reality. The Rion-Antirion bridge is located at the intersection of two major roads: the Patras - Athens - Thessaloniki motorway which links the three most important cities of Greece and forms part of the European motorway network, the Kalamata - Patras - Igoumenitsa Western axis. he National Technical University (NTUA) is the oldest and most prestigious educational institution of Greece in the field of technology, and has contributed unceasingly to the country's scientific, technical and economic development since its foundation in 1836.
Egnatia Highway
A modern closed motorway 680 kilometres long and 24.5 metres wide over the greatest part of its length following a new alignment and running across Epirus and Northern Greece from Igoumenitsa to the Evros, the Egnatia Motorway is one of the largest road construction projects in Europe. Nine major vertical axes connect the motorway with Albania, FYROM, Bulgaria and Turkey. Furthermore, 5 ports and 6 airports service the road. A raft of tunnels, bridges and interchanges carry it across the Greek countryside. Egnatia Odos" is building about 1650 bridges, large and small, with lengths reaching 1km (Arachthos Bridge, Greveniotikos Bridge, etc), spans up to 230 m (Votonosi Bridge) and high piers up to 100 m (Metsovitikos Bridge).
Attiki Odos
The Attiki Odos is one of the most modern motorways in Europe. The highest standards have been observed in its design as a high-speed toll motorway, in order to enable you to drive from one end of Attica to the other in safety and with no traffic lights. It consists of two main motorways: the Elefsina – Stavros – Spata A/P Motorway, which extends to 52.4 km and the Imittos Western Peripheral Motorway, which extends to 12.9 km. It has three traffic lanes in either direction and one emergency lane. With 32 multi-level interchanges and hundreds of overpasses and underpasses, it provides smooth and unobstructed traffic flow at high speeds.
