National Technical University of Athens
The National Technical University (NTUA) is the oldest and one of the most prestigious educational institution of Greece in the field of technology, and has contributed unceasingly to the country's scientific, technical and economic development since its foundation in 1836. It is closely linked with Greece's struggle for independence, democracy and social progress. In Greek, NTUA is called the "Ethnicon Metsovion Polytechnion" which stands for National Metsovion Polytechnic. It was named "Metsovion" to honor the donors and benefactors Nikolaos Stournaris, Eleni Tositsa, Michail Tositsas and Georgios Averof, all from Metsovo, a small town in the region of Epirus, who made substantial donations in the last half of the 19th century.
Aristotle University Thessaloniki
Civil Engineering Department is on of 42 Departments of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the biggest academic establishment in Greece. It belongs to the Faculty of Engineering, which comprises of 8 Departments, among which Civil Engineering Department is the oldest and largest, in terms of staff, building infrastructure and number of students. The Department of Civil Engineering, established in October 1955, is the oldest department within the Faculty of Engineering. In its initial stages, it constituted of 14 chairs, not all staffed from the beginning. In the years followed, new chairs were added, in accordance with the planning of the Faculty and the requirements of the study programmes, while the number of teaching staff increased and the department advanced on a self-reliant course, also offering its help to the new departments within the Faculty.
University of Patras
The Department of Civil Engineering was founded in 1972, consists of 35 full time faculty members and has an undergraduate student body of about 1200. It operates under the 5 years program of study and offers the degree of Diploma in Civil Engineering. The Department consists of three Divisions which cover the areas of Structural Engineering with 14 faculty members, Geotechnical Engineering and Hydraulic Engineering with 9 faculty members and Environmental Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Building Technology/City Planning with 12 faculty members. The Department operates 8 Laboratories for teaching and research purposes. These are the Structural Engineering, the Structural Materials, the Geotechnical Engineering, the Hydraulic Engineering, the Environmental Engineering, the Transportation Works, the Architectural Technology and Spatial Planning and the Surveying Laboratories. In addition, the Department has a Computer Center with a large number of personal computers, which provides adequate computing facilities primarily for undergraduate education.
University of Thrace
Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH) was established in July 1973. It is based in Komotini, Greece and also has campuses in the Thracian cities of Xanthi, Alexandroupoli and Orestiada. The University accepted the first students in the academic year 1974-1975. It was named after the ancient Greek philosopher Democritus who was born in the city of Avdira. Currently there are two Faculties and eighteen Departments in four cities - nine in Komotini, five in Xanthi, four in Alexandroupoli and two in Orestiada. The total number of students is approximately 30,000.
University of Thessaly
The Department of Civil Engineering was established in 1993 under the P.L. #177/93 and accepted the first students in the academic year 1994-95. It became part of the School of Technological Sciences of the University of Thessaly, currently the School of Engineering, which is located in Volos. The first students were admitted in the 1994-95 academic year and the first Teaching and Research Faculty openings were announced in August 1994. Already twenty (20) faculty members have been elected and appointed while four (4) more faculty members are in the process of being elected. The Laboratories of Computational Geomechanics, Soil Mechanics, Hydromechanics and Environmental Engineering, Concrete Technology and Reinforced Concrete Structures, Structural Analysis and Design, Highway Engineering, Strength of Materials and Micromechanics, Hydrology and Water Systems Analysis and Informatics in Civil Engineering are fully functioning.
